Bathroom Designs - An Idea That Can Make All the Difference
By Yamini Chowdhury

A dull, lifeless and lackluster bathroom can be quite an eyesore. And in most cases, the space's plaintive wail does not stir the homeowner into action, which really is such a pity considering the fact that we spend a great deal of time in this extremely personal space.
What also bemuses me is that most people treat every bathroom designs idea with passive resignation. Contrary to popular belief, one does not require immense wherewithal to give the bathroom a face lift. All it takes is an imaginative mind and oodles of patience, and you could transform this clichéd space into a spectacular work of art.
Important Considerations
You may chaff at your restrictive bathroom, and will stop at nothing to enhance its visual appeal, but there are important factors that you just cannot afford to gloss over:
  • The size of the bathroom is of paramount importance; the deciding factor that separates a luxurious master bathroom from a functional half bathroom.
  • Can you relegate the significance of convenient bathroom storage to the background?
  • Adequate ventilation can infuse copious doses of freshness into the space. A good ventilation system will ensure that mold and mildew do not blight the sheer magnificence of the space.
  • Don't remain in the dark about the radiant benefits that adequate natural light brings along with it through windows and skylights.
Ideas That Cause A Flutter
The thought of generating ideas to improve the décor of the bathroom can make any layman break into cold sweat. But not anymore; because here are three incredible ways that are just waiting soak your bathroom in style and elegance:
  • Merely replacing the shower or tub tile or even the flooring tile can cause a dramatic reversal of fortunes. And before you conjure up disturbing images of this project wrecking havoc on your savings, remember it can be accomplished in just $500.
  • For those that believe in results without caring a fig for the horrendous costs, then replacement of the fixtures-sinks, toilets and tub is just what the doctor ordered. You are sure to go into raptures at the end of it all.
  • But if you belong to the more financially astute breed of customer, repainting the bathroom in colors that match your vibrant personality is your best bet. It's also the one place that enables you to display rather unabashedly, your latent creative genius.
So stop kvetching about your bathroom and get cracking as soon as possible.

Shower Curtain Remodel

Shower Curtain Remodel

Shower Curtains - Selecting the Perfect One For Your Home
By Chuck R Stewart

Shower curtains are not usually one of the major decisions a homeowner spends much time considering before buying. The consideration and purchase of a shower curtain, however is not something that should be done without the proper attention. There are many things that should be taken into consideration. Cost, material and durability are just three items to think about before your purchase. All of these will help you achieve the appearance and impression you are hoping for.
When planning to buy your shower curtain it is important to think about the "look" you are attempting. This may be casual, formal, playful, tailored or un-tailored. Is it going to be hung in a child's bathroom? Perhaps it is for a master or guest bath. Will the shower curtain be where visitors will be seeing it? Is it in a bathroom that is used daily or perhaps just once in a while? All these instances should give you an idea of what type of material would suit the spot best. Shower curtains made of cotton or linen give the appearance of elegance. They are usually more full and flowing and therefore are a bit more formal than a vinyl or plastic curtain. Perhaps you want a clean, simple look in which case your "shower curtain" should actually be a glass door.
Durability and the resistance to mold and mildew are often a deciding factor when choosing the right shower curtain. This is where the amount of use a bathroom shower gets is crucial. While the fabric curtains are beautiful to look at, they may not be practical for long term, every day use. It is difficult to let a full and luscious shower curtain to air out and dry properly between each use. This means that mold and mildew will grow and multiply easily and abundantly. Vinyl and plastic shower curtains are less likely to have mildew grow on them and, if it does, cleaning is a snap. Many homeowners get the best of both worlds by hanging a vinyl shower curtain behind their more decorative fabric curtain. A fairly new fabric on the market is hemp. Hemp is a good choice because the heavy fabric is made from plant fiber, like linen or cotton. Hemp however is naturally antibacterial and antifungal, so it repels mold and mildew. For the environmentally conscious, hemp often grows organically and gets colored with natural dyes. These shower curtains remain durable after many cycles of wash and usually don't need a vinyl liner underneath. Of course a glass door is extremely durable and easy to keep clean.
The cost of your shower curtain is dependent on which type you choose. The vinyl or plastic curtains are the most inexpensive. The fabric curtains vary greatly. You can find many that are rather cheap or have one custom made by drapery seamstress. Hemp is a relative inexpensive alternative. Glass doors are usually the most expensive.
Whatever look and feel you are attempting to pull off in your bathroom, you can achieve it by giving some thought to your shower curtain. Consider the cost, durability and material. Ask the salesperson for any advice she can offer. Take your time so you are pleased with the final decision. In the end, you will be glad you did.

Select Your Bathroom Style And Then Your Bathroom Countertop
By Steve Galashaw

Now that you've decided to change your bathroom countertop you need to start by selecting your bathroom style. Once you've chosen a style that reflects your personal tastes you will be able to quickly and easily give your bathroom a facelift and you'll choose the perfect countertop.
1. Country Bathroom

Think warm, cozy, and inviting. Choose earth colors and pastels for your countertop. Use vintage fixtures. Floral patterns work fine for shower curtains, window dressings, and towels. Add a wicker basket then fill it full of soaps, shampoos, and tissues. Add a perfume bottle collection to the wall shelf.

2. Contemporary Bathroom

You'll want crisp, clean lines, and that means your countertop would look great in marble, stone, or stainless. Tile or wood floors look great and make sure your window dressings, shower curtain, and towels are all solid colored and sleek. Avoid clutter.

3. Traditional Bathroom

Who says a bathroom can't portray glamour? Your countertops should be porcelain or marble in tones that have flicks of gold or silver. Fixtures should be brass or gold plates and floral fabrics look great. Gild finishes on accessories looks great.

4. Nautical Bathroom

Nautical bathrooms are great! Think shades of blue including for your countertop. Add shells and bring the ocean to your bathroom. There's many different ways to achieve your nautical theme. It can be fun or it can be more traditional and refreshing.

5. Your Theme

Since it's your bathroom why not make your own theme? What do you love? What's your favorite color? Why not turn it into your new bathroom theme? Choose countertops that are versatile and flexible.

6. Southwestern

Do you love North American native art? Is the dessert your idea of beautiful? Have you got a knack for growing cactus? Then why not make it your next bathroom theme? Navajo looks great and a granite or stone countertop is perfect.

Your choices for bathroom countertops is endless. From fun to luxurious there's plenty of choices. Here are some tips worth considering.
1. Think luxury add marble and wow you've made quite an impact. Marble does however scratch and it can stain.

2. If you want a level of sophistication that makes a dramatic impact and is durable and almost indestructible then granite is what you need. And great news - it's also very affordable.

3. Stainless is trendy and very vogue. In fact there is nothing as vogue as stainless currently is and it looks clean and stylish.

4. Butcher block needs the right bathroom to look good and then it looks really rich. Remember to seal the wood.

5. Terra cotta looks fabulous in almost any bathroom.

6. Ceramic tiles come in a variety of colors and pattern so matching a bathroom décor is never a problem. They are easy to care for and very durable.

7. Wood gives a nice traditional finish that's warm and inviting. Be sure to apply a polyurethane sealer to protect the wood.

8. The right bathroom looks great with glass countertops. In fact there's nothing that looks more contemporary. Glass can be rather fragile and it does scratch so not recommended for a high traffic bathroom.

A Bathroom Countertop Can Change The Look Of A Bathroom
By Candice Sabrina

A bathroom countertop may be small in size, but it's third in line behind floors and walls when it comes to covering space in this room. Just as with kitchen countertops, the bathroom countertop comes in a variety of materials and in a full range of prices. Choosing a bathroom countertop depends on a number of factors including furthering your design, functionality, and budget. Clearly, it is important to choose that material that complements and fosters the overall tone of the bathroom.
Most materials come in a variety of color palettes and patterns that will offset whatever design you have chosen for the bathroom. Cultured marble is very popular material that is used in bathroom countertops, primarily because it is elegant as well as functional and is also available in many colors and styles. Work with your local home improvement store or bathroom retailer to find the bathroom countertop that will work best in your space at a price that is comfortable for you.

Bathroom Vanities Remodel

Choosing the Right Bathroom Vanity Design
By Groshan Fabiola

One of the easiest ways to revamp your bathroom is with a new bathroom vanity. Your vanity should coincide with other fixtures and design features in your bathroom. There are those with cabinetry, which could be vanity cabinets, wall cabinets, recessed cabinets and medicine cabinets. Some vanities or storage pieces also have open shelving. As far as design goes, cabinet vanities are often the most aesthetically pleasing. Then there are frameless vanity cabinets and European style vanities, which are more modern.
There are laminates, ceramic tile, wood, composite materials or solid surface materials including stone, stainless steel and concrete. Ceramic tile is probably the most common bathroom vanity surface material. Whatever material and style you choose, making the effort to find a bathroom vanity that suits your storage and design needs will pay off. New bathroom vanities add more storage and a pleasant look to your bathroom.

Tips When Considering a Bathroom Vanity on a Tight Budget
By Rob Buenaventura

Many people feel that bathroom vanities are a status symbol of sorts because of the elegance they can bring to a home. For many years, vanities were exclusively found in large homes with huge bathrooms. Times have certainly changed in the last 20 years and we are witnessing a growing trend in bathroom vanities in homes of all shapes and sizes. If you wish to have a vanity in your bathroom, there is no reason that in today’s market you cannot do exactly that, even on a limited budget.
You may think that making your own bathroom vanity is a daunting task to say the least. Your budget should vary according to the size of your bathroom and the vanity space you will be filling as well as the décor you have chosen to pursue. Size is typically one of, if not the most important factor when determining the price of your bathroom vanity. Larger vanities tend to be more costly. Bargain shops are also another great place to find the occasional bargain for bathroom vanities. You can find all kinds of sites designed for the sole purpose of offering inexpensive bathroom vanities, fixtures, hardware, and any number of other items to assist you in creating the bathroom of your dreams. Improvisation is another great way to discover all kinds of wonderful vanities for your bathroom. You can certainly create a cheaper bathroom vanity this way. The only limitation to the possibilities for affordable bathroom vanities is your own creativity and imagination.

Shelving Creates Space In Your Bathroom
Executive Summary By Aazdak Alisimo

Bathroom tier shelves off a good solution.
The tier shelf is simply a series of shelving units on different levels much like a book shelf. The two different types of bathroom tier shelves are the free standing and the wall mounted. A free standing tier shelf unit is designed to sit against the wall of the bathroom and provide an open storage area for bathroom personal items and towels and washcloths. If the tier shelf unit can be placed within arms reach of the shower or tub, the accessibility problem is solved.
The wall mounted tier shelf can be hung right inside the shower enclosure. Different units are two tier, three tier, and even four tier design. Many people are concerned with the idea of mounting the units in existing showers. The bathroom tier shelf unit can be a decorative accessory as well as a functional one.

Tips For Choosing the Best Bathroom Shelves For Your Needs
Executive Summary By Cheryl Marland

In your bathroom, you need to decide what you are going to use shelves for, before you can choose the best glass bathroom shelves. Glass shelves provide a certain "less is more" elegance, at a reasonable price. There is the tracking style, in which you screw long metal vertical strips down the wall, insert metal brackets at the desired heights, and then lay your glass across the brackets. For a permanent, single shelf, you might choose one with plain brackets. Again, if the glass is very heavy and needs more support, a third bracket would be advised. There is also free-standing glass shelving. The space-saver shelving units fit over the toilet tank and have shelves above. They come in both chrome and brass with glass shelves. If you have plenty of floor space in your bathroom, but could use more storage, a free-standing brass or chrome frame with adjustable glass shelves would be very elegant. On the top shelf, a lovely green cascading plant, or a low, artificial flower arrangement, and a small sculpture.

Essentials of Wallpapering

Executive Summary By Allison Ryan

Wallpaper patterns may be divided into two principal classes, the "one-top" or straight pattern papers, and the "two-top" or drop patterns. It is necessary to cut these papers so that the design matches when hung. For this reason consideration of the design is necessary before cutting such papers. The top of a flower or figure must not be cut in half. A "one-top" or straight-patterned paper is one in which the design matches on opposite sides of the paper.
Before cutting the paper, the required length is to be determined. Allowance must be made for cutting and trimming at the top and bottom. For example, a paper may have a pattern which is 12" high.
If there is no room at the top for trimming, the whole pattern must be cut off since, as has been said, the top must always have a whole pattern resting about 1/2" below the picture molding or ceiling line. The table is 7' long. Examine the design to determine the best place to cut, remembering that the top of the pattern will be about 1/2" below the picture molding.
The rest of the paper is cut into equal lengths of 8' 6". No bathtub is a good work table, even if it is a walk-in bathtub. In a drop pattern, every other length drops one half of a pattern. If the pattern is 20" long, for example, the adjoining pattern will be 10" below this.
It can be seen, then, that a drop pattern paper cannot be cut the same as a straight-pattern paper. If all lengths were cut the same, every other length would not match at the top. The wallpaper is noticeable from the shower as well. The easiest way to cut these papers is to take lengths from separate rolls. Cut the first length as described for a "one-top" pattern. Cut the next length off the other roll, matching it at the top
Continue to cut lengths alternately from one roll and the other, keeping the two separated. If there is no mantel in the room, the first width should be hung between the windows.
Then follow around to the right, covering one side of the room. If you are working in a bathroom with no windows, try affixing a bright lamp onto the shower tray or the shower doors (this might be difficult with frameless shower doors) to eliminate most shady corners. The wall over the mantel is marked so that the paper will be centered. This procedure is as follows: Measure the width of wall over the mantel to find the center. If the space requires four widths, place the first width of paper with its center on the center line of the mantel. The remaining part will be covered with two partial widths of full length.

Bathroom Wallpaper - Unwind in Affordable Luxury

Executive Summary By Barbara Tobiasz

I had my heart set on wallpaper but was reluctant since I had been told that moisture and humidity can cause the wallpaper to peel.
I still found myself thumbing through wallpaper books and magazines. You see, vinyl wallpaper is splash proof but not water proof. If the bathroom has sufficient ventilation and all edges are correctly pasted it can withstand this environment. Vinyl does have many attributes such as washabilty, scrubabilty and durability if placed wisely.
To compete with other wall covering, wallpaper manufacturers have created many new designs such as the slate effect, stone effect, tile effect, water splash and mosaic effect. Since it was unwise to hang the wallpaper on all the bathroom walls, I went with a combination of all three, wallpaper with accent borders, tile and paint.
I have a sitting room in the master bath, that upon the walls, I placed a vinyl wallpaper of a vintage sea foam and gold stripe pattern. Above it was an antique look of imperial bath tubs with the classic black and white tile floor. To help this pattern flow, on half of the wall, I choose the same design in tile around the bath. Above the bath I merely painted the wall in the same hue as the imperial bath. Neutral colors like white, beige, or yellow help make the room look larger and feel airy. The patterns and colors should compliment each other. There were pictures of boats, sea shells, fish, birds and sea creatures.

There are far more choices of wallpaper borders for your kitchen than I have room to write.

Creating A Bathroom Wall Design

Executive Summary By Anthony Lee

Deciding what materials to be used for your bathroom walls is not an easy task though. Start by knowing your options for wall design. Tile has long been a popular choice for bathroom wall. For example, terra cotta tile achieves a wall that looks weathered and rustic. Marble tiles, like any other stone tiles must be sealed and require frequent cleaning. But marbles create a unique look when installed on specific areas of the wall.
Vinyl tiles are affordable compared to stone, porcelain, or ceramic. Aesthetic wise, vinyl tiles are not your best option.
Terrazzo tiles give unique beauty, elegance and longevity. However, it is quite expensive to use as wall design.
Glass with marble and limestone can also work.
There is nothing worst than a bathroom with 4 empty walls. Create a wall design according to your preference.

Installing Bathroom Flooring

By Gary Wells

Are you ready for a new bathroom floor? All you need are a few simple guidelines and quality floor tile or linoleum.
Tile works especially well, because any of the pieces that become rotted, mildewed, or damaged are easy to replace without taking up the entire floor. Linoleum may be cheaper, and some people find it a smoother application and fit than tile. Next, buy your supplies at the hardware or flooring supply store. Ask the sales associate for suggestions or help when you go shopping for bathroom flooring needs. Read the directions on the adhesive container as well as guidelines that come with the tile or linoleum. If you haven’t already, check out tips for removing the old flooring, and repair or replace the sub-floor.
Open the windows or run the whole-house fan to provide adequate air circulation to offset fumes from the adhesive and flooring product. Remove any debris from the exposed sub-floor. Keep everyone off the new flooring until the adhesive has set.
After installation, follow manufacturers’ guidelines for cleaning and maintaining your new bathroom floor.

Bathroom Tile Ideas for Bathroom Floor Tile

By David Buster

Bathroom tile ideas for bathroom floor tile can help you know what options to consider for your bathroom. Bathroom tile comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, patterns and textures and they are the basis for any bathroom design. Bathroom tile ideas can help you have the very best bathroom possible.
Ceramic bathroom floor tile is often used because of its durability, resistance to dampness, its safety to walk on when wet and its ease of cleaning. If you select ceramic tiles for your bathroom, consider using a tile that has a slip-resistant surface for bathroom safety, which is one of the best bathroom tile ideas. If you buy and install unglazed tiles, they will need to be washed frequently because they absorb stains quite easily. Bathroom floor tile shapes can be squares, rectangles, hexagons and octagons while accent pieces can be narrow and small diamond-shaped.
Here are bathroom tileideas for bathroom floor tile:
1 - If you use solid color ceramic bathroom floor tile in your bathroom, you can add tile borders of a different color to the tile floor, or you can create a border by alternating different colors. This kind of visual treatment can create a more interesting bathroom floor.
2 - When using the same color ceramic tile for the floors and walls, choose a different tile size for the walls or lay the wall tiles diagonally to create a more interesting visual effect.
3 - Another of the bathroom tile ideas is to choose a grout color that contrasts with the ceramic tile color. For example, if you are using white tiles, you could use blue, red or yellow grout for contrast. Be sure and apply sealers to grout lines in areas of heavy wear since sealers will protect and preserve grout colors.
4 - If your favorite color for a bathroom is pink, for example, add a few pink decorative tiles for the walls or use shapes, textures and borders to give it some visual interest. Select some rows of the walls where you can also use some of the pink tiles placed diagonally.
5 - To give your bathroom a contemporary style and look, consider using bright and bold colors with shapes or graphics against plain backgrounds. Contemporary style accessories and fixtures will further provide a modern-looking bathroom.
6 - If you are trying to have a romantic or Victorian look in your bathroom, use floral tiles in soft colors like pink, light green or light blue plus handpainted ceramic sinks and perhaps a wooden floor.
7 - For a Mediterranean bathroom look, mix terra-cotta tiles with Mexican or other hand-painted tiles for the floors. For the countertop perhaps mix the hand-painted tiles with another plain color tile.
Bathroom tile ideas and tile color are important since color can greatly affect your mood -- making you feel calm or energizing you. Warm colors like peach and yellow are fun, they make the bathroom feel cozier and they go well with a more country looking bathroom decor. If you use neutral colors like beiges or whites, they will make the room look larger, they will reflect light and they are always in style. Colors like blue, green and violet are viewed as serene or cool colors. Brighter colors like black or red add drama to the decor, absorb light and will make the room appear smaller. In rooms with plenty of windows and natural lighting, consider using darker tiles to offset the ambient lighting. You can also work in colors you want through the use of accent tiles and accessories.
Have fun as you select the styles, colors, patterns and sizes of bathroom floor tile and related details for your bathroom. You'll want your bathroom to be a fun, cozy room to spend time in and the bathroom floor tile used can help create that kind of atmosphere. Use bathroom tile ideas to help you have that special bathroom that you can enjoy every day.

What Kind Of Tile Should You Install In Your Bathroom?
By Phillip Gatlin

If you want to transform your bathroom without having to do a major refurbishment, then it might be an idea to look down at the floor, and think about replacing the flooring with some new bathroom tiles. Here we'll look at some of your floor tileoptions.
One of the tile materials that has really grown in popularity in recent years is stone. It is never a good idea to install carpet in the bathroom, and many other types of material do have a cold feel, but with stone floortiles and under-floor heating you can have the best of both worlds. If you want to add a feel of luxury to your bathroom, then you might do well to consider marblefloor tiles. For an easier maintenance choice you might consider artificial marble tiles rather than quarried natural marble.
If you are looking for something easy to install, you might consider linoleum floor tiles. One of the most common types of tile found in bathrooms is the good old ceramic floor tile. Tiles can be extremely slippery in a steam-laden bathroom. This needs to be taken into account if you are considering ceramic floor tiles.
But whatever the material you choose, remember that there are now hundreds of different designs of floor tiles.
How to Choose the Best Tiles When You Remodel Your Bathroom
By Mark Stein
Choosing tiles for your remodeled bathroom is usually a process that requires some thought and consideration. Tiles come in many different shapes, and types, and materials. Some tiles are even designed to trap heat, so that your floors remain heated for a period of time.
Teal walls and brown tiles do not go together well!
Ceramic or marble tiles are usually more expensive and cost more to place. Heated bathroom tiles are also an option. Some bathroom tiles are formulated out of easily renewable bamboo, and provide sleek tiles that look chic and eco-friendly.
Beware of purchasing certain tiles though. The tiles you choose are ultimately about going with what feels right.

Colors of Granite Countertops

Executive Summary By Steve Galashaw

There are as many colors of granite as there are in a rainbow. When you consider the infinite ways that colors can be combined in various colors of granite countertops, there is really no limit to the colors of granite countertops that you can choose from.
In fact, many granite suppliers and retailers lay out the various colors of granite countertops according to a color scale showing all the major colors, including white, black and brown. Also, there will many times be a 'rare' or 'exotic' category for granite colors. Think about going with a greenish color of granite countertop. If your bath room is decidedly pink or rosy in color, try a dark red granite countertop. Most of all, have fun when choosing between colors of granite countertops. Many granite retailers will be happy to send you samples of various colors of granite countertops. If you'd rather see the specific colors that interest you before deciding on a purchase, ask for samples of the specific color of granite that interest you.

Getting the Most Out of Your Bathroom Design Project
By Andrew Stratton

In many new homes and in plenty of remodels, the bathrooms are no longer just spaces of functionality but are becoming personal relaxation spas, especially master bathrooms. Analyze the space you have available. For some, a huge, jacuzzi tub is the main feature of their dream decor. For others, beautiful wall-to-wall tile with custom design work is most important.
If you're not sure about the options and style trends available to you, you might do well to visit your local drug store and pick up a home improvement or remodeling magazine and look for ideas. For instance, you can have a linen tower bathroom cabinet positioned in such a way that you can hide a television inside to watch when soaking for exorbitant amounts of time.
It's nice to be able to actually visualize what certain spaces could look like and how certain bathroom cabinetry will work with specific counter tops and other fixtures. Once you have surveyed your options and determined your plan, the best place to start may be to choose the exact bathroom cabinets you want and build the rest of the style around them. The cabinets are often one of the most striking features of the bathroom and certainly they set the tone for the entire room.
There are several types of bathroom cabinetry that you may need to decide on. After you have pinpointed the style and color you want, you can then decide if and where you need other bathroom cabinets like linen towers for storage, built-in hampers and storage units above the toilet.

And then of course, you can narrow down the details and the organization of the design, like built-in dividers inside the drawers, cabinets to easily store and hide your commonly used grooming appliances, and cosmetic slide-out trays.

Choosing Counter Tops

Executive Summary By Steve Galashaw

Counter tops for your kitchen, bathroom or other areas can be made from a wide variety of materials. Your intended use of the counter tops will help in deciding which material to use. Some of the materials available for counter tops include natural and man-made substances. Examples of natural materials could be slate, granite or other stones. Stainless steel will give an antiseptic appearance to kitchen or bathroom counter tops giving confidence to guests that these surfaces are clean. Copper is another metal used for counter tops. Stone composites and other man-made materials are also available for counter tops. Stone composites are made from the ground remains of quarried stone mixed with resin filler. Solid surface counter tops with sink basins as part of them are possible with stone composites.
Man-made materials are often used for solid surface counter tops. Shapes can be formed of man-made materials that stone composites can not achieve. The possibilities are endless for the design of your counter tops. You can achieve what ever effect you desire for your décor through judicious choice of the materials for your counter tops.
