Decorating a Small Bathroom - Storage Ideas for a Small Bathroom
By J Ruppel
Whether
your home is small and so the bathrooms are small, or if its just simply one of
the extra baths or half bathroom in the house that are on the small size,
almost every homeowner needs to deal with the task of decorating a small
bathroom. But in addition to simply decorating the room, you often need to
integrate some additionalstorage for bathroom linens or to accommodate the needs of guests using the
room.
Storage
Needs in a Small Bathroom
One of
the extra challenges of a small bathroom is finding the storage space
in these small quarters. Often in order to open up the room, there is not even
storage under the vanity, instead the builder opted for a simple pedestal sink
with no place to store anything.
Two
solutions present themselves for storage. One is to use a simple tower storage
closet for linens. These tall narrow storage racks can be found as simple open
racks, or they are offered as beautiful wooden cabinets, becoming a featured
part of the room decor. There are also cornerversions of these tall cabinets, which occupy very little of the floor
space as well.
The
other space that is often unused in a small bathroom is the over the toilet
area. While some bathrooms have a closet built in, most half baths don't come
with storage there. This is an ideal space, since it will take up almost no
usable floor space to use this. There are a wide variety of over the toilet
cabinets. Many are wall mounted, but these can be a major project to install if
you are installing cabinets.
Sometimes
we are just looking for something simple, like an open rack, and a simple
chrome or metal finish is the ideal solution. But you can find some fine pieces
of furniture that take advantage of this space, and are designed to stand over
the toilet, giving you true shelf space while basically unobtrusively
straddling the toilet. You can find them in white or other colors to match the
fixtures, or fine wooden finishes to be a featured piece in the room.
Bathroom Storage - Maximizing Your
Minimal Space
Executive Summary
By Joel Benstein
There
are things that people like to store or display in bathrooms, though, and many
times bathroom cabinetry or shelving comes as an afterthought.
If you
have the available floor space, a floor-standing bathroom cabinet might answer
all your needs in one unit. This of course takes up the most space, but in the
one unit you'll have display shelves, storage shelves and also an enclosed
cabinet, depending on the model you choose. You can see a wide variety of these
shelves through links on The Home Shelving Guide to Bathroom Shelving.
The trick is to find shelves that firstly provide you with enough shelf space.
Consider floating glass shelves. These shelves have no frame, no extra pieces
whatsoever. There are certainly units that have both enclosed cabinets and open
shelves.
Match
the shelves to the décor of the bathroom. Modern chrome and glass angled
shelves would look out of place in a bathroom with wood tones and a
fancy-framed oval mirror, for example.
Take a
good look at the spaces available in your bathroom, particularly the space
above the toilet and in the corners. All of the shelves available online have
their measurements posted. Finally, think about how your bathroom looks now,
and how nice it'll look with the addition of some small, but nice shelves.
